Everyone knows Dubai — but there is far more to the UAE than most European visitors ever discover. Fly in, treat Dubai as your base, and you unlock one of the most underrated multi-destination road trip routes on earth: Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Hatta — each genuinely different, none more than two hours' drive away.

This guide is written specifically for UK, German and French travellers. All prices are converted into euros at the current AED–EUR exchange rate (approximately 1 AED = €0.25 as of 2026). Every tour listed includes hotel pickup from Dubai, English-speaking guides and free cancellation.

The UAE has two very different travel seasons. Timing your visit correctly makes an enormous difference to your experience and budget.

Peak Season — November to March Temperatures range from 18°C to 28°C — ideal for all outdoor activities. Expect festivals, events and higher hotel prices. Book 6–8 weeks ahead.

Shoulder Season — October & April Warm days between 25°C and 35°C, fewer tourists and better hotel rates. An excellent window for European travellers.

Summer — May to September Extreme heat ranging from 40°C to 48°C. Indoor activities only. Hotel prices drop dramatically — great for budget travellers.

European School Holidays — December, February, Easter UK half-terms and German school holidays drive peak demand. Book 10+ weeks ahead for the best availability and prices.

Dubai is the UAE's crown jewel — a city of extraordinary contrasts where pearl-trading heritage districts sit alongside record-breaking skyscrapers, gold souks and a coastline that defies imagination.

Burj Khalifa — The World's Tallest Building (828m) No visit to Dubai is complete without ascending the world's tallest structure. The 124th and 125th floor observation decks deliver breathtaking 360° views over the city, desert and Arabian Gulf. The Dubai Fountain show below runs every 30 minutes from 6pm — completely free to watch from the boardwalk.

Museum of the Future Opened in 2022, this stunning toroidal building on Sheikh Zayed Road is an immersive journey into humanity's next 50 years. Named one of the most beautiful buildings on earth. Photo stops are included on most city tours, with ticketed entry available as an add-on.

Old Dubai — Al Fahidi, Dubai Creek & Abra Ride The Al Fahidi Historical District is Dubai's oldest neighbourhood — a preserved labyrinth of wind-tower houses, art galleries and courtyard cafés that transport you back to the 1800s. Cross Dubai Creek on a traditional wooden abra (water taxi) for just AED 1 (€0.25) — one of the great travel bargains in the world.

Gold Souk & Spice Souk The Gold Souk in Deira is one of the world's largest, with over 300 shops selling jewellery under a traditional wooden arcade. Next door, the Spice Souk fills the air with cardamom, saffron, frankincense and dried roses. Both are free to browse and genuinely atmospheric.

Palm Jumeirah Drive along the iconic palm-shaped island for panoramic views of Atlantis The Palm and the sail-shaped Burj Al Arab — one of the world's most recognisable hotels. Photo stops are included on all major tours.

Dubai Marina & JBR Beach The modern Marina district is one of the world's largest man-made marinas — a dazzling cluster of skyscrapers, waterfront restaurants and yacht berths. The adjacent JBR beach is Dubai's most popular public beach, perfect for a sunset stroll.

Dubai Frame A 150m-tall giant picture frame straddling old and new Dubai, with glass-floored sky bridge views and an immersive exhibition tracing the city's transformation. Entry is approximately €12 per person as an add-on.

  • The Big Bus audio guide is available in English, German and French, making it one of the most accessible self-guided options in the city.

  • Dubai Creek abra rides cost just AED 1 (€0.25) — the best-value tourist experience in the entire UAE.

Abu Dhabi is home to world records, mosques that leave you speechless, and a cultural depth that Dubai simply doesn't match. A full-day tour from Dubai takes approximately 8–10 hours and is one of the most rewarding day trips in the region.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque The undisputed highlight of any UAE trip. With 82 domes, the world's largest hand-knotted carpet and over 1,000 crystal chandeliers, this is a place of extraordinary beauty. Open to visitors of all faiths — allow a minimum of 90 minutes. Entry is free.

Louvre Abu Dhabi A French architectural masterpiece designed by Jean Nouvel, housing 600 works spanning ancient civilisations to modern art. Particularly meaningful for French visitors — the cultural partnership between Abu Dhabi and Paris is unique in the world.

Qasr Al Watan — Presidential Palace Opened to the public in 2019, the palace features grand ceremonial halls, an extraordinary library and the spectacular "Palace in Motion" light show on selected evenings. One of the most photogenic buildings in the Arab world.

Abu Dhabi Corniche & Heritage Village A scenic waterfront promenade with Gulf views, alongside a reconstructed traditional village showing Bedouin life before the oil era — with demonstrations of pottery, weaving and metalwork.

  • The Grand Mosque requires full coverage for all visitors — women must cover their hair and wear an abaya (available to borrow on-site from ~€12, but a lightweight linen option from home is more comfortable). Men need long trousers and long sleeves.
  • The mosque is closed to tourists on Friday mornings; afternoon tours adapt the itinerary accordingly.
  • For French visitors, pre-booking the Louvre Abu Dhabi separately is strongly recommended — it deserves 2–3 hours of your time alone.
  • Best visited October to March. Avoid July and August for outdoor sightseeing — temperatures regularly exceed 45°C.

Just 20 minutes from Dubai, Sharjah is a UNESCO Creative City of Culture and arguably the most intellectually rewarding destination in the UAE. Its beautifully restored heritage area and world-class museums offer an authenticity that Dubai's polished tourist trail rarely matches.

Heritage Area of Sharjah City A beautifully restored historic quarter featuring the Museum of Islamic Civilisation, Sharjah Art Museum, Maritime Museum and traditional Arabic architecture. More genuinely atmospheric than anything equivalent in Dubai.

Museum of Islamic Civilisation A world-class collection of Islamic art, science and manuscripts. The astrolabes, early Qurans and astronomical instruments are particularly rewarding for visitors with an interest in the Islamic Golden Age. Especially popular with German and French cultural travellers.

Blue Souk (Central Market) One of the UAE's best destinations for buying carpets, pashminas and traditional crafts — notably less touristy than Dubai's Gold Souk. A more authentic and relaxed shopping experience.

Sharjah Maritime Museum Traces the UAE's deep seafaring heritage through pearl diving, fishing and trade exhibits. Excellent context for understanding the region's pre-oil history.

  • Sharjah is a dry emirate — no alcohol is sold or consumed anywhere in the city. Enjoy a drink at your Dubai hotel before or after the trip.
  • Dress conservatively throughout Sharjah. Modest clothing with shoulders and knees covered is required in the Heritage Area.
  • The Sharjah International Book Fair in November is one of the world's largest literary events — an exceptional addition to any cultural trip for French and German visitors.

Ras Al Khaimah is the UAE's northernmost emirate and its most dramatically beautiful. Where the Hajar Mountains rise sharply from the desert floor, the scenery and adventures on offer look nothing like the UAE most visitors expect.

Jebel Jais — UAE's Highest Mountain (1,934m) A breathtaking scenic drive through the Hajar Mountains to the UAE's highest peak. Stunning vistas that genuinely feel worlds away from Dubai — one of the most spectacular drives in the entire Middle East.

Jebel Jais Flight — World's Longest Zipline (Optional) At 2.83km, the Jebel Jais zipline is a certified world record. Speeds reach up to 150km/h with panoramic mountain views throughout. An absolute must for adventure travellers from the UK and Germany.

Dhayah Fort & RAK National Museum A 16th-century hilltop fort offering panoramic views over the emirate's palm groves and coastline. The RAK National Museum traces the emirate's 7,000+ years of documented history.

Wadi & Mangrove Stops Hidden valleys, ancient rock formations and coastal mangrove stretches that harbour flamingos and other wildlife. The side of the UAE that most package tourists never discover.

  • RAK is approximately 1.5 hours north of Dubai — opt for an early 8:00am pickup to make the most of the full day.
  • Book the zipline well in advance, especially for peak season (November–February). Slots sell out weeks ahead.
  • Comfortable closed-toe walking shoes are essential for both Jebel Jais and the wadi walks.
  • Al Marjan Island in RAK has excellent all-inclusive beach resorts — consider an overnight stay rather than day-tripping from Dubai for a more relaxed visit.

Fujairah is the UAE's only emirate on the Gulf of Oman coast — and it offers a strikingly different experience from Dubai. Pristine beaches, dramatic mountain backdrops, the country's oldest mosque and some of the UAE's best snorkelling all sit within a single day trip.

Al Bidya Mosque — UAE's Oldest (15th Century) Dating back to the 1400s, this small but perfectly preserved mosque is the oldest working place of worship in the UAE. Its distinctive mud-brick domed construction is unique in the Arab world and has stood for over 600 years.

Fujairah Fort & Heritage Village One of the oldest forts in the UAE, built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the town. The adjacent Heritage Village shows how Emirati mountain families lived before the oil era.

Snoopy Island Snorkelling A small rocky island named for its cartoon resemblance, surrounded by sea turtles, reef sharks and colourful coral. Among the best snorkelling in the entire UAE, with equipment rental available on-site.

Al Aqah Beach & Hajar Mountain Drive Pristine beaches with clear Gulf of Oman water — notably less crowded than Dubai's coastline. The scenic mountain drive through the Hajar Range is spectacular, especially for photographers.

Friday Market (Open Daily) Despite the name, open every day. Fresh fruit, vegetables, local honey, traditional pottery and carpets at genuine local prices — far removed from the tourist-facing souks of Dubai.

  • The Gulf of Oman is warmer, calmer and notably clearer than the Arabian Gulf on Dubai's side — a better option for swimmers and snorkellers.
  • Fujairah's relatively lower summer temperatures (due to the surrounding mountains) make it one of the UAE's most comfortable warm-season destinations — an excellent option for budget travellers visiting between May and September.
  • If you enjoy history, consider combining with a stop at the Mleiha Archaeological Centre in Sharjah on the return journey — evidence of anatomically modern humans dating back 120,000 years has been discovered there.

Hatta is a stunning mountain enclave that technically belongs to Dubai — yet feels a world away from the city. Tucked between the Hajar Mountains near the Oman border, it offers kayaking on a turquoise dam, ancient heritage villages, cooler mountain air and outdoor adventures that surprise even well-travelled visitors.

Hatta Dam Kayaking Kayak on a magnificent reservoir of turquoise-blue water enclosed by jagged desert peaks. One of the most surreal and beautiful experiences in the UAE — genuinely difficult to believe you are still within Dubai's borders.

Hatta Heritage Village A restored 3,000-year-old mountain village showing traditional Emirati mountain life — mud houses, an ancient falaj water system, a fort and a cool green oasis. The temperature here is noticeably lower than Dubai city.

Mountain Biking & Zip Lines (Optional) Hatta has developed an impressive adventure trail network with mountain biking trails graded for all levels, zip lines and an obstacle course — a popular alternative to Jebel Jais for active visitors.

  • Best visited November to March for outdoor activities. The oasis stays noticeably cooler than Dubai year-round.
  • Hatta is approximately 1.5 hours from Dubai — consider combining with a stop at the Mleiha Archaeological Centre on the return journey for a well-rounded historical day.
  • Hatta is famous for its mountain honey — look out for it at the Heritage Village market and local stalls.

Do UK, German and French passport holders need a visa?

No. Citizens of the UK, Germany and France all receive a visa on arrival at Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah airports — free of charge — for up to 30 days, extendable to 90 days. You simply need a valid passport with at least 6 months remaining validity. No pre-application is required.

Is it safe to travel outside Dubai?

Yes. Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Hatta are all extremely safe for European visitors — arguably safer than most European cities. The UAE consistently ranks among the world's lowest crime-rate countries. Roads between emirates are excellent and well-signposted. Solo women travellers, families and older visitors all report feeling very comfortable throughout the country.

Is it easy to travel between emirates without a car?

Guided tours (as listed in this guide) include all transport from your Dubai hotel and are the simplest option. For independent travel, inter-emirate taxis and private transfers are affordable — roughly €20–€35 for a one-way taxi from Dubai to Sharjah, and €60–€90 to Ras Al Khaimah. Public buses exist between emirates but are infrequent and not optimised for tourists.

What should I wear at mosques and heritage sites?

At the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and other mosques, both men and women must be fully covered to the wrists and ankles. Women must also cover their hair. Abayas and headscarves are available to borrow on-site, but bringing your own lightweight linen options is more comfortable. For general sightseeing in Sharjah and other conservative emirates, keep shoulders and knees covered.

What is the best time of year for a European visitor?

October to March is the ideal window — temperatures of 18°C–30°C are perfect for outdoor sightseeing, beach visits and desert activities. December and January are the coolest months and coincide with UK and European school holidays, so book well in advance. Summer (June–September) offers steep hotel discounts of up to 50% for travellers happy to focus on indoor attractions.

Are the emirates suitable for families with children?

Yes — the UAE is one of the most family-friendly destinations in the world. Abu Dhabi's Yas Island (Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, Yas Waterworld) is exceptional for families. RAK offers beach resorts and the Jebel Jais zipline (with minimum age and weight restrictions). Fujairah suits children who enjoy snorkelling and beach activities. Hatta is ideal for families who enjoy cycling and kayaking. All tour operators offer child pricing — typically 30–40% discount for children under 12.

Can I drink alcohol in all the emirates?

Alcohol is available in licensed hotel restaurants and bars in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. Sharjah is completely dry — no alcohol is sold or consumed anywhere in the emirate. If you are based in Dubai and day-tripping to Sharjah, simply enjoy a drink back at your hotel in the evening.

How do prices in other emirates compare to Dubai?

Sharjah and Ajman are significantly cheaper than Dubai for accommodation, food and shopping. Ras Al Khaimah hotels offer excellent value — comparable luxury at 30–50% less than equivalent Dubai properties. Abu Dhabi is broadly similar in price to Dubai. Fujairah and Hatta sit comfortably in the middle. Restaurant meals across all emirates typically cost €8–€15 for a good local meal.

Do I need travel insurance for the UAE?

Travel insurance is not mandatory for entry but is strongly recommended. Healthcare in the UAE is excellent but expensive for uninsured visitors. Ensure your policy covers medical evacuation and repatriation. UK residents should note that the GHIC card does not cover the UAE — separate travel insurance is essential. Most tour operators require proof of insurance for adventure activities such as the Jebel Jais zipline.

Can I visit all six destinations in a one-week trip?

Yes — comfortably in 7 nights. A suggested itinerary:

  • Day 1 — Arrive Dubai, rest + evening Dubai Fountain
  • Day 2 — Dubai full-day city tour (Old Dubai, Burj Khalifa, Marina)
  • Day 3 — Abu Dhabi full day (Grand Mosque, Louvre, Qasr Al Watan)
  • Day 4 — Sharjah cultural morning + Hatta afternoon drive
  • Day 5 — Ras Al Khaimah adventure (Jebel Jais + Dhayah Fort)
  • Day 6 — Fujairah east coast (Snoopy Island, Al Bidya Mosque, beaches)
  • Day 7 — Leisure, desert safari in Dubai, or departure

Dubai serves as an excellent central hub — all five other destinations are within 2 hours' drive, most with hotel pickup included in tour packages.
