Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected wetland where thousands of migratory birds gather each year, and one of the most surprising, serene escapes in the UAE.
What you'll see at Ras Al Khor
The sanctuary spans over 6 square kilometres of salt flats, mangroves, mudflats and lagoons, providing a safe haven for tens of thousands of migratory birds. The stars of the show are the Greater Flamingos — their pink silhouettes gather by the water in spectacular formations, especially in winter. Look closer and you'll also spot grey herons, ospreys, reef herons and many other species thriving in the shadow of the city skyline, alongside fish, crustaceans and small mammals. The reserve is managed by Dubai Municipality, which keeps it fenced to protect the delicate ecosystem.
The three bird hides
Because the wetland itself is protected, visitors watch the wildlife from three free viewing hides placed along the sanctuary's edge. Each looks over a different habitat:

Entrance to Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary is completely free. Individuals and families don't need to book — simply arrive during opening hours and head to one of the hides, reachable by car or bicycle via the area beyond Dubai Design District along the creek.
Booking is only needed in two cases: groups of five or more, and the free guided tours run by Dubai Municipality (Sunday to Thursday, 7:30 AM–2:00 PM). For either, email nrs@dm.gov.ae in advance. Up-to-date maps and hide locations are on the official Dubai Municipality website.

How to get to Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary
There's no metro station right beside the sanctuary, but it's easy to reach:
- By metro + taxi: take the Dubai Metro Green Line to Al Jadaf or Creek station, then a short taxi to the hides.
- By car: from Mall of the Emirates, take Sheikh Zayed Road (E11), exit at junction 47, then follow Al Meydan Road (D69) onto Al Khail Road (E44), which leads toward the sanctuary on Ras Al Khor Road.
- By taxi / ride-hailing: the simplest option — about 15 minutes from Downtown Dubai.
